LifeCo Holdings Malawi Partners With Sustain Green to Restore Mussa Village Through Tree Planting Initiative

On 27th March 2024, LifeCo Holdings Malawi joined forces with Sustain Green and Blantyre City Activation in a powerful environmental restoration exercise at Mussa Village, Group Village Head Mpulura, Traditional Authority Nkalo. This village is home to families who were displaced from Ntauchira Village due to the devastating impacts of Cyclone Freddy. With the area heavily affected and lacking vegetation cover, the initiative came at a crucial time.

LifeCo demonstrated its commitment to climate resilience, sustainable development, and community well-being by donating and planting 1,200 tree seedlings, including indigenous and fruit trees. This contribution marks a significant step in restoring the environment and rebuilding hope for the affected households.

Supporting Community Resilience Through Nature

During the event, LifeCo Life Manager Sheilla Khombeliwa highlighted the company’s role as a responsible corporate citizen. She emphasized that LifeCo remains committed to corporate social investment (CSI) initiatives that protect and uplift local communities.

Khombeliwa explained that planting trees in Mussa Village was driven by the need to address environmental vulnerability. With few remaining trees in the area, the community becomes more exposed to severe weather conditions especially floods and storms. The reforestation effort aims to prevent similar disasters in the future and strengthen the village’s natural defenses.

In addition to indigenous trees, LifeCo donated fruit seedlings to each household. These fruit trees are expected to:

  • Improve household nutrition
  • Contribute to long-term food security
  • Offer income-generating opportunities once the fruits mature

Khombeliwa encouraged villagers to take great care of the seedlings and affirmed LifeCo’s commitment to monitoring tree growth to ensure a high survival rate.

Beyond Trees: Empowering Communities with Knowledge

The initiative extended beyond environmental restoration. Khombeliwa also took time to educate the community on the importance of life insurance, particularly funeral policies that LifeCo provides to groups. She explained how, with as little as K100 per month, community members can secure dignified support during times of loss.

Her message focused on empowering families with financial security and knowledge underscoring LifeCo’s dedication to holistic community well-being.

A Community United for a Greener Malawi

The tree planting exercise attracted strong local support. The Village Headman of Mussa Village, the Chiradzulu District Forest Officer, and the Blantyre City Activation Project Manager applauded LifeCo for the timely intervention.

They emphasized that the trees planted will play an important role in:

  • Restoring soil fertility
  • Rebuilding damaged landscapes
  • Reducing vulnerability to climate-related disasters
  • Enhancing the long-term sustainability of the village

They also encouraged more corporations to join the movement toward reforesting Malawi and supporting affected communities.

Sustain Green’s Role in the Project

As a leading environmental nonprofit, Sustain Green ensured the success of the project by:

  • Conducting site assessments
  • Coordinating logistics with Forestry Department officials
  • Mobilizing volunteers and community members
  • Providing technical guidance during planting
  • Documenting the event for awareness and accountability

This partnership model showcases the power of collaboration between corporates and environmental organizations in driving long-lasting change.

A Step Toward the 1,000,000 Trees Goal

The LifeCo tree planting activity contributes directly to Sustain Green’s ambitious mission to plant 1,000,000 trees across Malawi. With each partnership, the organization moves closer to restoring degraded landscapes and building a greener, more resilient future for communities.
