Project

Lifeco. Tree Planting

Date

27th March, 2024

Project Overview

On 27th March 2024, LifeCo Holdings Malawi partnered with Sustain Green and Blantyre City Activation to support an impactful tree planting initiative at Mussa Village, Group Village Head Mpulura, TA Nkalo.

The project involved donating and planting 1,200 tree seedlings, including both indigenous and fruit trees, to help restore the environment and improve the livelihoods of families who relocated from Ntauchira Village after the devastating effects of Cyclone Freddy.

Project Details

LifeCo demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability and community support by:

  • Donating 1,200 trees for reforestation.
  • Planting trees together with villagers and volunteers.
  • Supporting households with fruit seedlings to improve future food and income security.
  • Educating the community about the importance of tree care and environmental protection.
  • Sharing knowledge on life insurance and funeral policy benefits to promote financial security.

Sheilla Khombeliwa, LifeCo Life Manager, encouraged the community to nurture the planted trees and emphasized that LifeCo will continue monitoring the growth and survival rate.

How Sustain Green Supported the Project

As the implementing partner, Sustain Green:

  • Coordinated with local leaders and the Forestry Department.
  • Identified Mussa Village as a highly deforested and vulnerable area.
  • Mobilized volunteers for the planting exercise.
  • Supplied technical guidance on planting and tree care.
  • Documented the event through photography and community engagement activities.

This collaboration strengthened the community’s resilience and contributed to long-term reforestation efforts.

Community Impact

The project provided meaningful benefits to the people of Mussa Village:

  • Restoration of degraded land affected by Cyclone Freddy.
  • Increased environmental protection against future disasters.
  • Fruit trees to support household nutrition and potential income generation.
  • Education on sustainability and financial security.

Local leaders, including the Village Headman, the Chiradzulu District Forest Officer, and the Blantyre City Activation Project Manager, all praised LifeCo for its timely support and leadership in environmental restoration.
