Press for Nature – Trees Assessment

Date

February 2025

Project Overview

In early 2025, Press Corporation Plc engaged Sustain Green to conduct a comprehensive Trees Assessment under their Press for Nature Initiative. The assessment covered the 20,000 trees planted across Chikwawa District by the end of February 2025. These trees were planted in several communities and schools, including Njereza, Liwonde, and Utumbe villages, Chikhwawa Primary and Secondary Schools, Dyeratu Primary School, Chilongoma Primary, Ngabu Secondary School, Namalindi Primary, Mikolongo Primary, Dzumela Secondary, Bwabwali Secondary, and Chilongoma at Ngabu Secondary School.

The goal of this assignment was to determine survival rates, identify challenges faced by communities, and provide strategic recommendations to improve the long-term success of the initiative.

Project Details

Sustain Green’s Trees Assessment assignment involved the following key activities:

  • Conducting survival rate inspections across all communities and schools where planting occurred.
  • Engaging local leaders, teachers, and community members to gather insights about challenges affecting tree growth.
  • Identifying environmental, social, and maintenance barriers that may hinder the project’s progress.
  • Developing a strategic award structure to motivate high-performing communities and encourage improved stewardship.
  • Recommending targeted resource mobilization for communities with the highest potential to achieve strong survival rates.
  • Documenting findings through photos, interviews, and field observations for quality assurance.
  • Producing a comprehensive assessment report detailing survival percentages, community challenges, and actionable recommendations.

This work strengthened Press Corporation Plc’s efforts in ensuring transparency, sustainability, and long-term environmental impact for the Press for Nature Initiative.

How Sustain Green Supported the Project

As the implementing assessment partner, Sustain Green provided:

  • Coordination with Forestry Department officials and community leaders.
  • Technical evaluation and classification of tree survival performance per area.
  • Field-level community engagement to understand maintenance gaps.
  • Practical recommendations for improving care, monitoring, and accountability.
  • Strategic frameworks for awards and incentives to boost community motivation.
  • A full written report for Press Corporation Plc with findings and proposed interventions.

Community Impact

The assessment revealed critical insights that will support better environmental management in the district:

  • Clear identification of areas with strong and weak survival rates.
  • Understanding of community-level challenges affecting tree care (watering, grazing, vandalism, etc.).
  • Recommendations that will guide future planting cycles and community engagement.
  • Strengthened collaboration between schools, village leaders, and Press Corporation Plc.
  • Increased motivation among communities through the proposed award and recognition strategy.

Local leaders appreciated the follow-up efforts and expressed commitment to improving tree survival and long-term reforestation efforts.
